In my final semester of college I took a class called Creating a Magazine: From Inspiration to Prototype. The majority of the class was dedicated to working on creating a magazine in a group of four or five students. As a group we developed a “reason for being,” fleshed out a concept, settled on an aesthetic and vibe, and illustrated/wrote/designed our magazine, “Mundane.” We liked the idea of creating something personal and intimate, encouraging the reader to interact with the magazine by doodling, cutting things out, creating garments, following recipes, and listening to playlists. We chose to pepper the magazine with our own faux ads, imitating the styles of retro advertisements, adding a vintage/humorous element. I was responsible for curating/assembling/designing the magazine in InDesign as well as creating many of the spreads. As part of the final for class, we had to present our magazine and do a mock pitch to potential stockists (see deck).

In addition to the group project, students were required to make individual magazines. You can view mine here (it’s interactive, so explore with your curser).
